Style Notes: what I learned from fashion month.

As much as I love seeing the new collections shown during fashion month, I'm always just as inspired by the style photographed outside the shows. Below are my favorite looks from the industry's most stylish people, and notes on how I plan to recreate them.

1. Florals are always chic--even during the fall.

2. Layer a fitted, printed sweater over a peplum dress for a genius mix of sexy and cozy.

3. Wear a gorgeous coat over a simple sheath of the same length. Add kick-ass shoes.

4. Play with androgynous looks: tuxedo jackets, shirts buttoned to the neck, menswear-inspired shoes, and sweatshirts + ladylike jackets. Added points for gold touches and ornate details.

 5. Mix up proportions by pairing a wispy maxi skirt and a chunky knit. Perfect for Los Angeles fall weather.

6. Even in the most fashionable of occasions, a blazer plus a white tee goes a long way.

Prep Perfect

I have to admit, I've been a little out of the Fashion Week loop. I got a mean cold this week, and tuned out a bit to the fashion world. But when my friend showed me Jenni Kayne's Spring 2012 collection, I just couldn't ignore it. This collection is country club chic at it's finest--I mean, the cable knit sweaters, the neon pink short-suit, and the croakies? It doesn't get much better than this. I love that the collection maintains an urban aesthetic despite its obviously preppy roots.

Classic American style with a downtown twist. The designer himself referrd to his fall collection as "the nonchalant style of a 1970′s rock star’s girlfriend.”

Modernized 1970's prairie girl fashion. Too cool. I adore the flouncy full skirts and demure necklines.

Not surprisingly, one of the biggest themes of New York Fashion Week was the 1970's. Groovy fashion is certainly staying alive, at least for the next season to come. 

Street Style: Fashion Week

With fashion week coming to a close, it would be regrettable not to share with you the street style that had me drooling this week.
